Top seeds through to quarters in Manchester
The afternoon session saw USA’s Amanda Sobhy save game balls in the fourth to squeeze past Tinne Gilis before three Egyptians advanced to the quarters.
Ali Farag, like Sobhy, had to save game balls to avoid being taken to a fifth by Greg Marche, and he’ll play Marwan ElShorbagy who beat Adrian Waller in four games while Sobhy will face Nour El Tayeb, a straight-games winner over Donna Lobban.
In the evening session the remaining seeded players all won to ensure that the top eight seeds will contest both sets of quarter-finals.
Karim Abdel Gawad and Simon Rosner were the final men’s winners, while Sarah-Jane Perry – coming from two nil down to beat Hollie Naughton – and Tesni Evans – saving match ball in the decider against Alison Waters – guaranteed a British player in the women’s semis.
