The seventh edition of the Manchester Open continues today at the National Squash Centre with sixteen second round matches.
Action takes place on the permanent Glass Court and the traditional Court Three, before moving to the additional Glass Court in the main arena for quarter-finals onward.
It was another good day for the home players with nine advancing to the last eights, and there were three seeding upsets – a famous win for Nick Wall as he beat third seed Miguel Rodriguez, Abhay Singh and Grace Gear also beating their seedings.

Afternoon Roundup : Wall downs Rodriguez to end afternoon session
Day Two started with comfortable wins for Women’s second seeds Nele Gilis-Coll and Salma Hany, both securing three-nil wins against Egyptian opponents.
Men’s top seed Aly Abou Eleinen started his campaign with a solid win to end the run of France’s Edwin Clain, while sixth seed Juan Camilo Vargas got past Emyr Evans when the Welshman retired injured toward the end of the third in an even match.
Two English wins followed as Jasmine Hutton overcame birthday girl Torrie Malik in three close games and Grace Gear upset eight seed Mariam Metwally in straight games.
The session finished with two more English successes, in the men’s draw this time, Jonah Bryant seeing off Sanjay Jeeva in straight games while Nick Wall produced the biggest upset so far as he overcame third seed Miguel Rodriguez in four games.
Evening Roundup : Singh downs Lake as quarter-finalists decided
India’s Abhay Singh produced the only seeding upset of the evening session as he beat fifth seed Nathan Lake in four games.
Elsewhere the seeded players all progressed, but Sarah-Jane Perry was taken to five by compatriot Alicia Mead and Leonel Cardenas and Katie Malliff both had to recover from a game down. Farida Mohamed, Gina Kennedy and Declan James won in straight games but the easiest passage was by George Parker after withdrawal of Patrick Rooney with injury.
The quarter-final lineups are set, with English representation in seven of tomorrow’s eight matches, all to be played on the Glass Court Arena that has been building over the preceding days ready for a spectacular finale to the tournament.
